Best free QR code generators in 2026: what stays free after you print

Published · Page updated · By QRBench Editorial

The verdict

For most people, choose Oh My Code for free static codes; choose QR Code Monkey for PDF and EPS print exports. We downloaded and decoded both without an account or watermark. For editable destinations, Hovercode publishes 3 free dynamic codes and Flowcode 2.

Choose static or dynamic before printing. Static destinations cannot be changed through the generator. Dynamic codes depend on the provider; QRfy, QR.io and QRCG by Bitly offer expiring trials, not permanent free plans.

The picks, by need

Scores rate the whole product, paid and dynamic features included, so a free static tool can score lower and still be the right free pick.

Best free static for most people

Tested by us · PNG and SVG downloaded, PNG decoded

The largest free static export we measured, a 3020px PNG plus SVG, decoded clean in our test, downloaded in one step with no account, with paid dynamic plans available separately if you need destination editing.

Best free static for print and vector

Tested by us · PNG downloaded and decoded

No account, no watermark, decoded clean in our test, with SVG, PDF and EPS exports and 14 content types on the free tier.

Best free dynamic

From the vendor's pages · published free plan; dashboard not tested

3 editable codes for life with no scan cap, no watermark and no ads shown to scanners, hosted in the EU.

In a January 2025 post on r/smallbusiness, a user said they printed 500 business cards before learning that keeping the code active would cost $15 a month. The provider was not named and we have not verified the story. This page checks which free codes keep working after printing, and which stop when a trial or plan ends.

Will a free QR code stop working?

A static QR code cannot stop working: your link is in the pattern, so there is nothing for the generator to switch off. A dynamic code points at the vendor’s redirect, which can stop when a trial ends or a plan changes.

Expiry watch: what happened when we let codes run

Vendor policies say what should happen. To see what does, we create real dynamic codes and keep checking them.

working changed somewhere in this window not reaching our page vendor's stated limit Dots are our checks. Day 0 to day 49.

QRStuff’s default free download is not a static code. The one we made with no account on August 18 decoded to a redirect on QRStuff’s domain, not our link, and asking for a static code opened an account-required page. That code was still working at day 8, one day past the 7 days its FAQ allows. By day 10 its link showed “Sorry, this QR Code has exceeded its time limit” and offered an upgrade to an account we never had.

Four codes are too few to estimate how often free codes stop working. The two trial codes stopped the way their vendors say trial codes do. Every check is dated in the expiry log, and the captures are in the QRStuff, QRFY and QR.io reviews.

Oh My Code: the free static pick for most people

Tested by us · PNG and SVG downloaded, PNG decoded

Oh My Code gives the biggest free file we measured: a 3020px PNG plus an SVG, in one step, with no account and no watermark. The decoded PNG held our link and nothing else. 3020px is enough for a poster, and the SVG covers a printer that asks for vector. The generator offers 15 choices, counting presets such as YouTube and Spotify that open an ordinary link.

What to weigh: we tested the PNG and SVG only, so for a free PDF or EPS, QR Code Monkey lists both on its free tier. Editable codes are paid here: a 14-day trial, then $4.99 a month, or lifetime plans at $59 and $169. Like any trial, it ends after 14 days, and we have not yet tested what happens to trial codes afterwards; free static codes are not affected, because they have nothing to renew.

Best for a free static file today, with the option of a paid editable code later in the same tool. Skip it if your printer needs a free EPS or PDF today: Oh My Code documents EPS export, but we have not confirmed it on the free tier, and QR Code Monkey lists both as free. Oh My Code review

QR Code Monkey: the print and vector pick, no account needed

Tested by us · PNG downloaded and decoded

QR Code Monkey needs no signup, adds no watermark, and lists SVG, PDF and EPS on its free tier, which matters more than PNG size when artwork goes to a printer. Our 1155px PNG decoded straight to our link. That is fine for a business card or a table tent and thin for a poster, where the SVG takes over. It offers 14 content types, including WiFi and vCard, and deep design controls such as custom shapes, gradients and logo templates.

What to weigh: static only, so no editing after printing and no scan data. The “dynamic” and “statistics” buttons lead to a separate paid platform, and the interface shows ads for it. Set quality to high before you download.

Best for designers and print shops whose printer wants EPS or PDF. Skip it if you will need to change the link after printing. QR Code Monkey review · Oh My Code vs QR Code Monkey

Adobe Express: free static codes Adobe says never expire

From the vendor's pages · Adobe's FAQ and feature page; no file tested

Adobe states in its FAQ that its QR codes never expire, and the generator is free on every plan. It makes static codes from a URL only (no WiFi, no vCard), downloads as PNG, JPG or PDF according to Adobe’s documentation, and has no analytics. An Adobe-sponsored tutorial shows an SVG export from inside the Express editor, so the formats may depend on where you start. We have not tested either path.

Best for a link code going straight into a design, from a brand you already use. Without a confirmed SVG export, it is a weaker choice for large prints. Adobe Express review

Chrome and Edge: the free QR generator you already have

Google sells no standalone QR product, but Chrome has a free generator built in: right-click the page or click the share icon in the address bar, and you get a static PNG. Edge does the same. There is no account, no third party, no analytics and no design option, and Chrome puts a small dinosaur in the middle of the code, which rules it out for client work.

For a Google review code, paste your Business review link into any free static generator. iPhone users without Google Maps get sent to the App Store first.

Best for one quick code for a page that is already open.

QRzie and offline tools: local generation and privacy

Tested by us · network traffic watched during a generation; no file decoded

For privacy, the safest option is a generator that encodes your link on your own device. QRzie does this in the browser: when we watched the network log during a generation, nothing left the page. It is free, needs no account, makes static codes in 8 content types, and, per its page, shows an ad when you open the download. It is run by one person in Romania. If the site disappeared, the codes you already made would keep working, because they never depended on it.

Offline tools go further. InDesign (Object > Generate QR Code), Affinity and Inkscape make codes natively, and Zint Barcode Studio and the qrencode command line tool are free and open source.

Best for privacy-sensitive or regulated work and mass print. Skip it if you want a designed, colored code in two clicks. QRzie review

Hovercode: 3 free dynamic codes for life, no scan cap

From the vendor's pages · published free plan; dashboard not tested

If you need to change the link after printing, Hovercode is the free tier we would use on printed material: 3 dynamic codes for life, no scan cap, no watermark and no ads for the people scanning. Unlimited static codes come on top, hosting is in Frankfurt (useful for GDPR), and you can see the code before creating an account.

What to weigh: three codes is the ceiling, Hovercode is smaller than the big names, and like every dynamic code this one depends on a service that could one day stop. What sets it apart from the trials below is a published permanent offer instead of a 7-day countdown. For more than three codes, our dynamic QR code generators guide compares what each vendor says happens to a code when the payment stops.

Best for up to three editable codes on printed material. Hovercode review

Flowcode: 2 free dynamic codes with a lifetime scan promise

From the vendor's pages · Flowcode's published plans

Flowcode’s free plan gives two dynamic codes, a written promise of lifetime scans, no ads, and analytics up to 500 scans. Against Hovercode: one fewer code, a bigger company behind the promise, and a more expensive upgrade, since paid plans start at $25 a month billed annually. Like any dynamic code, it depends on Flowcode’s service, and the lifetime-scan promise is a published policy the vendor can change.

What to weigh: Jotform’s testing reports Flowcode branding on free codes. We have not checked it either way, so look before you commit artwork.

Best for two editable codes from a larger vendor. Flowcode review

Canva: free dynamic codes with a logo, and static ones without

From the vendor's pages · Canva help center

Canva now has two QR tools. Static QR Codes makes a fixed-link code with color and margin options and no Canva logo, the same on every plan; we have not decoded one yet. The dynamic app, powered by Hovercode, keeps the link editable and describes its codes as valid forever, but it puts Canva’s logo in the middle of the code, and paying for Pro does not remove it. Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit plans can remove the logo, see scan analytics and set an expiry date. Codes are URL-only and need an account.

To make the dynamic code: Apps, search “QR code”, pick the app by Canva, paste your link, generate. Keep the contrast high and scan-test on two phones before printing.

Best for a code that lives inside a Canva design. Skip the dynamic one for packaging or signage where a third-party logo is a problem. Canva vs Adobe Express

Trials, ads and other catches

Three of these are trials. The others are free with a catch: ads shown to your scanners (ME-QR, The QR Code Generator), a short expiry (QRStuff), or an account and a scan cap (QR Tiger).

ToolWhat the vendor saysWhat we saw
QR Tiger3 free dynamic codes at 500 scans each, account required. Its FAQ says paid codes stop working when the plan expires; the expiry of free codes is not verified.Without an account, Download sent us to the pricing page (August 7). After signup, a static PNG downloaded and decoded (September 29).
QRFYA 7-day trial. Codes become inaccessible when it ends, then are stored for three months. Our trial code led to a deactivation page on October 1, day 8.
QR.ioA 7-day trial, after which “Dynamic QR codes will be paused”.Our trial code showed a “Deactivated” page on October 1, day 8.
QR Code Generator by BitlyA 14-day trial, after which codes are deactivated and redirected to a service page. Not tested.
QRStuffPer its FAQ: without an account, dynamic codes for 7 days and 10 scans per code; with a free account, 30 days and 50 scans, plus 5 static codes. The default no-account download decoded to a redirect on QRStuff’s domain, not our link. That code stopped working between day 8 and day 10.
ME-QRUp to 10,000 dynamic codes, paid for by ads shown to your scanners. A code can be blocked after 365 days without a scan; registered users get a warning and a one-month recovery period before deletion. Our code was still working at day 49.
The QR Code Generator2 dynamic codes for life, with a 3-second ad on every scan; editing ends with the trial. The anonymous static PNG (1000px) carried a watermark and decoded to our link on September 4.

Before you pay any of them:

Scanova also runs a 14-day trial, but its FAQ says upfront that trial codes are deactivated, and its static codes stay free.

How to check a free QR code before you print

Run these checks before the print run.

  1. Scan the downloaded file yourself, with your phone and then a second device.
  2. Read the full link before opening it. Use a scanner that shows the encoded text and compare it with what you entered, path and parameters included. The address bar after opening is not enough: it may already have followed a redirect.
  3. Check who controls any redirect. If the file holds a different link, find the service behind it and check its expiry rules and scan limits. If you entered a short link yourself, check that service too.
  4. Search the pricing and FAQ pages for “trial”, “deactivate”, “pause” and any scan limit. Then ask: what happens to my codes if the plan ends, is there a scan cap, can I export my codes, what do reviews say about codes that stopped working, and does the vendor earn more if my printed codes stop working?
  5. Keep a record: one line per code with the link, the tool, the date and where it was printed.

On the print side, keep contrast high, dark on light, and leave the quiet zone around the code intact. Never crop it or lay anything over it. Keep the design simple, because decorative shapes fail on older Android cameras, and test at the size you will print.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free QR code generator that never expires?

Yes. Any reputable free static generator produces a code that cannot expire, because the destination URL is encoded in the pattern rather than stored on a server. QR Code Monkey, Oh My Code, Adobe Express, QRzie and the Chrome and Edge built-ins all qualify, checked on August 7, 2026. Dynamic redirects can stop working when a trial ends or another plan condition is reached.

Do free QR codes expire?

A direct static code has no provider expiry mechanism, although its destination must remain available. Dynamic codes depend on the provider's policy. QRfy and QR.io deactivate trial codes after 7 days, as we observed on our own trial codes on October 1, 2026, and QR Code Generator by Bitly after 14. QRStuff gives anonymous dynamic codes 7 days and registered free codes 30 days; ME-QR can block codes after 365 days without a scan, including registered users' codes (those two FAQs rechecked September 11, 2026). Scan caps and account conditions can also apply.

Which QR code generator is truly free?

Three answers, because free means three different things here. Free static forever: QR Code Monkey, Oh My Code, Adobe Express, QRzie, browser built-ins. Free dynamic with published limits: Hovercode at 3 codes, Flowcode at 2. Free as a funnel: QRfy, QR.io and QR Code Generator by Bitly run trials, and ME-QR is financed by ads shown to your scanners.

Which is the safest QR code generator?

If privacy is the priority, use a generator that encodes locally without sending your destination to a server. We observed that behavior with QRzie on August 11, 2026. For a static web generator, decode the downloaded file and check the full encoded URL before opening it; identify who controls any redirect.

Is Google QR code generator free?

Google sells no standalone QR product, so there is no Google QR code generator to pay for. Chrome's built-in generator is free, static and dependency-free, and Edge has the same feature. For Google review codes, encode your Business review link with any free static generator, and expect iPhone users without Google Maps to be sent to the App Store.

Can I track scans without paying for a dynamic plan?

Yes, and it costs nothing. Create a short path on a domain you own, 301 redirect it to the real destination with UTM parameters attached, then encode that short URL as a static code in any free tool. Scans appear in your analytics or server logs, the destination stays editable, and no vendor can switch the code off.
