Two free static generators, tested the same morning, both handing over a file with no account and no watermark that decodes to the URL you typed. That is where the resemblance ends. QR Code Monkey is a free generator and nothing else, operated from Germany, with the dynamic option routed to a separate paid platform. Oh My Code is a French design-first platform whose free static export is the front door to a paid dynamic tier. They meet on this page because a search for a free QR code lands on both, and because our free generators guide names them together with one rule: QR Code Monkey if the destination will never change, Oh My Code if it might.
This page is the evidence behind that rule. Since version 1.1 of our methodology, the two no longer share a numbered ranking; the reason is below.
The free static test, side by side
We ran both on August 7, 2026, with the same test URL, and decoded the downloaded files rather than trusting the previews.
QR Code Monkey: paste the URL, set quality to high, click Create QR Code, then Download PNG. No account, no email, no card, about a minute. The file came out at 1155px, with no watermark and our URL in the pattern, no qrcode-monkey.com anywhere in the payload. SVG, PDF and EPS sit on the same free tier. Fourteen content types, including WiFi, vCard, meCard, location and event. Two frictions: the download button stays inert until you press Create, which people miss on a first visit, and gradient fills do not survive the PDF and EPS exports.
Oh My Code: paste the URL, style the code, click download. No account, no email, no card, under a minute, and nothing between the button and the file; the account push is a passive banner. The PNG came out at 3020px, plus an SVG in the same free export, no watermark, our URL and nothing else in the payload. Colors for dots, background and corners, logo embedding, frames, and five global shapes.
Catalogue correction, September 14, 2026. Oh My Code’s public selector now has 15 choices, including Snapchat, YouTube and Spotify. Several are URL presets. Our earlier 12-versus-14 comparison is out of date. GS1 Digital Link is also documented with an account, so the earlier claim that the product lacked GS1 was wrong. This was a separate catalogue and documentation check; the file tests above remain dated August 7. QR Code Monkey’s event, location and meCard presets are concrete reasons to choose it, without treating a raw count as a quality ranking.
So on the free file: QR Code Monkey wins on the tested formats, Oh My Code wins on resolution and on shapes, and neither carries a watermark, an expiry mechanism or a redirect. For a business card or a table tent, 1155px is comfortable. For a poster, it is thin, and the gap to 3020px is the widest we measured between two free static tools that day; SVG closes it for anyone whose printer accepts vector, which is most of them.
What sits behind the free code
Here the two products stop being the same thing.
QR Code Monkey sells nothing of its own. The generator is free because dynamic codes, scan statistics and campaign folders are sold on a separate paid platform reached through the Get More upsell in the editor; tick statistics and editability and you leave for that product. Dynamic is not a locked tier here, it is a different tool, and the answer to can I add tracking to this code later is no. The upside of that structure is that nothing can be paywalled retroactively: there is no account holding your codes.
Oh My Code sells dynamic codes behind the same interface. Flip Track scans and you are routed to account creation, because tracking means a redirect on Oh My Code’s servers and a redirect means a plan: 14 days on trial, then The Friendly at $4.99 a month or $25 a year for 2 dynamic codes, 500 scans a month and advanced analytics, or The Boss at $14.99 a month or $75 a year for unlimited codes, scans and users. One-time plans exist at $59 and $169, re-read August 10, 2026. A partial account check on September 21, 2026 covered destination editing, a public vCard, device routing, one-scan expiry and a two-visit analytics check. The dynamic and analytics scores remain provisional: this was not a full account reassessment, and broader feature coverage and reporting depth remain unverified. The review records the scope.
That paid path is the whole difference in our grid. Dynamic features and analytics carry 27.5% of the weighted score between them, and QR Code Monkey scores 2.0 and 0.0 there, by design rather than by failure. It is why Oh My Code sits at 8.2 and QR Code Monkey at 6.0, and it is why, since methodology version 1.1, static-only generators are scored on the same grid but shown outside the numbered ranking: a single average would only measure what they do not sell. On the five criteria they both compete on, the gap is small; QR Code Monkey leads on design and customization, 8.5 to 8.0, with its vector exports and custom shapes.
Trust, and the record
Both free static codes pass the test that matters: the downloaded pattern contains your URL, so no server anywhere can switch it off. QR Code Monkey’s X account has answered the expiry question in public for years; Oh My Code’s page title commits to no expiry. Neither shows ads to the people who scan your code. QR Code Monkey’s interface carries ads for its paid sibling; Oh My Code’s carries the account banner and the Track scans toggle.
On data practices, Oh My Code publishes more: GDPR, CCPA and SOC 2 Type II badges, and a scanner-side consent page for dynamic-code tracking, verified July 3, 2026. QR Code Monkey’s GDPR posture is unclear from its pages, which matters little for a static generator whose output never calls home, and more if you need processing terms on file.
On the public record, the two swap places. QR Code Monkey is the reflex answer in the r/graphic_design thread about an expensive lock-in lesson and in craft tutorials, with years of users behind it. Oh My Code is recent and small; we found no user reports about it in the Reddit, Product Hunt or Trustpilot material collected for this index, so its review rests on our tests and its disclosures.
The verdict
For a permanent code going to print, choose by output. Free PDF/EPS or event, location and meCard presets, QR Code Monkey. The largest raster export and more shape options, Oh My Code. Either way, scan the file before it goes to the printer and check that the scanner shows your domain; both did in our test.
For a destination that may need to change, or a scan count you have to report, QR Code Monkey is the wrong category of tool and says so itself. Oh My Code can do it, from $4.99 a month or $59 once, with the reservations its review states plainly: a young company, and dynamic features covered by a partial account check rather than a full reassessment.
